Information
for Parents about Math CAMMP
Math
CAMMP began at UNC
Charlotte in 1991 and has been
offered every summer since then.
The program's growth and long
waiting lists led us to open
new sites at public and private
schools in the Charlotte region.
In summer 2010,
Math CAMMP will be offered at five
off-campus sites, including our
second year in Greenville, S.C.
Since several new math camps will be
offered through the summer programs
office, make sure your child is
enrolled in the real
Math CAMMP.
UNC
Charlotte's
Math CAMMP is the same
in both structure and content to CAMMPs available at other sites.
The math curriculum, the math
software, the individualized
instruction and assessment, and the
half-day robotics programs are
identical.
There is
a difference, however. At UNC
Charlotte, the
CAMMP "teachers" are
themselves students enrolled in a
graduate course on elementary math
methods. They have learned the
CAMMP
approach to teaching math, and they
spend their second week conducting a
live internship with real students
in rising grades 1 to 6. This
is the
CAMMP week
at UNCC. These teachers
literally practice what they have
learned under the supervision of
Drs. Green and Piel. These
math teachers are NOT paid for their
work, and this is why the UNCC
program is substantially lower in
cost than it is at other sites.
[The afternoon robotics teachers are
paid.] At all other sites,
CAMMP staff is made up of the top
teachers from its UNCC course, and
they are paid at those sites.
That is what accounts for the
significant difference in cost.
This
summer,
Math CAMMP
(the largest of UNCC's summer camps)
will have its own separate drop off
and pick up location near the new
College of Education Building.
We will be sending you more
information about that when summer
gets here.
Please
complete a separate registration
form for each child who will be
attending camp.
If full
payment is not submitted with the
registration, a deposit of $100 must
accompany your registration for each
child. In May we will bill you
for the balance, which must be paid
no later than June 11, 2010. If
the
remaining balance is not paid by
that time, your child will lose
his or her place in the camp and the
next person on the waiting list will
take that slot.
